Hardly a day goes by where I don’t read how bad California
is by someone who does not live here. They tell us Business Hates
California and it is impossible to do business in California. Well I have been
in business in California for 20 years and yes California has issues, but
compared to other parts of the country it is a good place for business.
California is 1st in Venture Capital (VC) funding and gets 50% of
all VC funding – Investors invest for a profit. The next state was Massachusetts
at 10% and 5% went to Texas. California got more than the
next 10 states combined. VC’s don’t hate California many of them live here.
California is 1st in Engineering graduates
followed by New York and Texas.
California is 1st in GDP for US States with 14%
California is 1st in personal income
California is 1st in total patents and 2nd
in patents per worker
California is 1st in number of high technology
business
California is 1st in number of Fortune 500
companies headquartered here.
California is 1st in number of Universities with
433 and 3 are ranked in the top 25 in the world. New York is 2nd
with 335.
Is California low in anything? Yes- lots of stuff, but most
important money back from the federal government!
California is 47th in money back from the Federal
Government. Sorry Minnesota you are last
and even more generous than California.
California would have a budget surplus if it got as much as
Virginia back from the federal government.
California gets $0.79 for every dollar sent to Washington,
unlike New Mexico which gets back $2.00
for every $1.00 sent, Virginia gets $1.66 and Arizona $1.30.
California’s real estate is expense, but so are most
desirable areas. It is hard to be creative when it is 20 degrees below zero and
you are freezing. It is equally hard to get work done when it is hot and humid and
you feel like sleeping. While the rest of the country suffers through +100
summers and –20 degree winters, I open
my window and enjoy the cool 72 degree fresh air. California is not all bad. So
be nice!
